If you are a U.S. citizen it is getting harder and harder to maintain your driver's license unless you have a street address someplace that you can document with things like utility bills, bank statements, or lease agreements. Almost all states are now enforcing the Real ID act which requires these things. This may rule out some mail forwarding services, though I don't know that for a fact. It also means that you may not be able to renew your license online or via mail. Something to check before you leave the U.S. is how to do this. I find it is easiest to use a trusted family member's address as my "home" address, but in actuality probably 95% of my correspondence is now online only. I tell the family member to just put all the mail in a big box, which I eventually sort out on a visit. It is worth it to get a few important paper things sent to that "home" in case you need to bring them into the motor vehicle bureau some day.
