We took a lovely reach out in to the Hauraki Gulf to try out Taleisin’s new sail.. Larry wants to make a few more adjustments so it sets perfectly for this years sailing.

    Dear Friends:

    Seasons Greetings and Happy 2010

For those of us currently residing south of the Equator, Christmas time coincides with summer. Here in New Zealand that means everyone, including ourselves, rushes to get ready for year-end celebrations, sailing holidays and the closedown of businesses (the majority of non-essential ones either close or let much of their staff off to enjoy the holidays for almost six weeks starting Christmas Eve.)

Larry has been busy rebuilding a spec boat in our boatyard. He has to figure out a way to get the centerboard keel out after someone hit some rocks, scuffed up the keelson and bent the pivot pin. Impala is a 20 foot trailer-sailor. Put it on a trailer and she goes to windward at 60 miles per hour. Great way for someone to explore the rivers, lakes and estuaries of New Zealand.

We assume our friends north of the Equator are enjoying the pre-holiday parties but also feeling the pressure of holiday shopping and planning. So rather than write a long newsy letter right now, we thought we’d share the following podcasts with you. By clicking below, you can download interviews we have done with National Geographic Weekend Radio, With Wind and Seas and with Furled Sails. Each one focuses on different aspects of our past sailing life.

Christmas at Mickey Mouse Marine, Kawau Island, New Zealand

We wish you good companions, good health, good sailing, and the time to enjoy it all this holiday season and in the coming year.

    Lin and Larry

P.S. Thank you to everyone who sent checks for the Kawau Uncovered calendar. The Kawau Bookworms (readers group); had a complete sell out and earned $8,700 to help equip our emergency response team. We hope you enjoy your calendar as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

    • Hello Lin and Larry. It’s so special to be able to contact you. I’ve read your books over and over since the 1970’s, followed articles in Cruising World etc. I was thrilled to find your site!

I wish you good health and fair winds in 2010, and a belated happy birthday to Larry.

    • Hello:

Thought I would let you know that I am the new owner of the Fatty Knees Boat Co., when Edey & Duff closed it’s doors I could not allow the Fatty Knees to die. I have acquired all the molds and have already started producing these beautiful little boats. Three weeks ago we shipped one to New Zealand, the new owner lost his on a South Pacific crossing. We have a new web site http://www.fattyknees.com and I am trying to keep an update on Facebook.

Iknow how much you enjoy your Fatty Knees and wanted you to know that they will continue.

    • Hello Lin and Larry from the Pacific N.W. My wife and I met you briefly at the P.T. Boat Festival in 08 I think. We go every year as we spent our honeymoon their on our little Coranado 25. That was 9-11-2001, a scary time. Waking to people running up and down the docks at P.T. Marina, yelling about what had just happened. We were not sure if we should continue our voyage. After talking with customs, we did head over to Victoria and then continued our honeymoon cruise to the Islands. We have enjoyed all of your books so much, as they are such a source or encouragement. I was in P.T. in the summer of ‘78 after getting kicked out of the Army for way to much drinking and what not. I wonder if you guys ever ran into Beau and his ol’ lady on their home built 48ft cat, red junk sails. Beau was a master wood craftsman, last I heard he was doing cabinet work at the yard; that was a long time ago. I met them when they first came back from Hawaii, no engine, at Port Angeles harbor in 1974. I was fifteen. We plan to leave for Mexico next fall on our little Cascade 29 (1964). Planning to head to the Marquesas, but will not set any hard plans and go as long as it’s fun! We plan to do some writing at some point, with your encouragement from Care and Comfort. I am following Jeanne Socrates, on Nereida, oldest female around solo. Currently at lat.50 south, long 110W as of 12-28-10, just getting ready to get around the Horn. She monitors Freq. 14.305 @ 22.45 and also after Pac.C net. @ 0400.

Again thanks so much for all you encouragement to newbies.
      Cheer’s,
Dave and Leiann Scee S.V. Chrysalis II
