| Cash and Carry | |
With the advent of ATM machines in almost every village and town we have visited
during the past five years, I almost abandoned our practice of carrying some travelers
checks and some US cash on board. Almost is the operative word; sure glad I had
250 US cash on board at Juan Fernandez. There is no bank there; no credit cards
were accepted by any merchants or restaurants. We were given a fair exchange rate
for the cash; only about 5% less than on mainland Chile: Our travelers checks
would have worked, but the exchange rate was 20% lower. |
