I have a bag filled with about two dozen
soft sponges. When we are in port, they
are stuffed in a back corner of the galley
locker. When we go to sea, I use them to
quiet down any pots, dishware, spices or
wine bottles that begin to clink together
because of the motion.
Other cruisers keep old socks and put wine
or liquor bottles in the socks to keep them
quiet in a seaway. This is far more important
on passage than you might imagine, the clink
of pots, the clang of cans rolling in the
locker next to you, can keep you from sleeping
soundly. A well-rested crew is a safe crew.
