It is difficult to inspect or maintain gear at the very top of
your mast, even with the best of bosun's chairs. In order to really
see the gear, you have to actually climb into a kneeling position
on the chair (a difficult and potential dangerous feat), or stretch
as far as you can from a seated position and hope you haven't missed
something. We saw a simple solution in Puerto Williams. The owner
off one charter boat had secured two folding bronze steps just three
feet below his masthead, perfectly positioned so that when his bosun
chair reached as high as the halyard allowed, he could flip open
the steps, step on them and, with his safety line still attached,
stand up and have a clear view of all the gear aloft.
