Because there are no shops on the island where we live in New Zealand, I have to provision almost as we do when we are cruising, with food reserves for three or four weeks, just in case the weather deteriorates and ferries (or our small run-about) can not make the run to the mainland, five miles to the west. As I was doing the initial shopping after eight years away, I came across one old friend made right here in NZ and a new one from the USA that are worth noting.
Fridge Friend, made by NRM Consumer Products (Chicago IL 60606 - Phone (312) 422-0155) is amazing. You open the Specially designed box and put it in the fridge or ice chest and it absorbs the chemicals that make produce and fruit ripen. I have kept lettuce in the cooler for up to two weeks and it stayed crisp and tasty. Not one piece of produce has shown any deterioration since I began using Fridge Friend. Each packet of this product lasts three months once opened. Unopened packets must be kept completely dry and have no shelf life limit.
Then there are Surprise peas and beans. These are made here and freeze-dried. They taste even better than the real thing when prepared with a tiny amount of sugar. So, if you are on your way through the Pacific look for them, since many island shops carry a supply. Once here, buy some and try them. I plan to take a dozen packets back with me when we head to the Chesapeake to rejoin Taleisin.
