| Night Vision Glasses |
|
One of the newer have to have it ideas being promoted by marine sales folk are night vision glasses. You may already have some on board, at no cost. When we were short tacking up the River Shannon in Ireland, trying to find a good place to anchor for the night, it was dark as h---; though the lights were all making sense, it was hard to judge our distance off one of the islands we needed as a landmark. Our pilot book said there was an old watchtower on the island - no lights around it. On the off chance, we got out our binoculars and were amazed. I could see the tower, even an old stone house near the shore. Since then we have found this night vision assist invaluable. Our binos are good to very good quality - cost just under $300 at a major marine store, 7 by 50 with a compass inside. Don't want to say they are the exact ones to buy - just know any quality binos will do the same. As for the compass - we find it useful for orienting but not as a substitute for a hand-bearing compass.
